As soon as we arrived on the sets, we asked to be shown the control room, from where all the activities of the 16 contestants (except going to the loo) are recorded by 32 cameras. Phew, talk about life without privacy it can’t be more invasive than this. The cabling in the house extends up to 7 km. An editing team of 10 people go through the tapes of contestants’ lives, from Monday to Wednesday midnight to make a 60 minute episode which is telecast on Saturday. The Sunday episode covers the remaining part of the week.
Lakme Fashion House is produced for STAR One, by FBC Media which is a subsidiary of FBC Europe. This format, wholly owned by FBC has already been telecast across four European countries (Italy, UK, France, and Sweden) and is now being aired in India.The series director Siddharth Bahuguna said that initially the contestants were not comfortable with the 24/7 surveillance, but soon got used to it. Mumbaikar Swapnil Shinde said that in the beginning, the contestants tried to find that part of the room, where the cameras could not reach. They even tried to look for hidden cameras, but to no avail. The camera team was even subject to verbal abuse when they tried to intrude into the personal spaces of a few of the 16. But within a day or two, everything worked out.
Sandeep Khosla says it was very challenging to find the top 16 designers, among the thousands, who had applied. For him, the show is not for creating item girls or item boys, it a fashion statement which can explain itself and can become a trend. “We are looking for trend-setting designers,” he states. This show is for anybody who’s creative (although 12 are NIFT graduates). It was very difficult for the duo to oust two designers every week. but it had tobe done as they had to send the best designer to work with Donatella Versace. The famed designer will personally come down to India to congratulate the lucky winner. The final episode will be aired on April 2.
When asked about the onion dress created by one of designers, Khosla said that in this show, they are looking for capability and talent, never mind if it’s an onion dress or a ghese dress. The main point being the ability to create something new, irrespective whether it’s wearable or not. What’s important is the impact it has on you. Does it leave an impression long after you’ve stopped looking at it. Jani elaborates, “If most clothes are revealing then it’s not our fault, we have not given any such briefs to the contestants. Actually during the Mumbai audition, it was the woman designers who made the model reveal, much more then the guys.”
The design of the set is very chic, yet simple. The art director while attempting to give it an international look has still retained its Indianess. Knowing that some contestants will be here for as many as six weeks, care has been take to look after all their comforts. The girls area has been given a feminine touch. They have been provided with basic needs i.e table, chair, to make it a home. While the rooms have been made colourful and vibrant, the work areas have been deliberately kept simple, so as not to distract them from their work.
