It’s that time of the year where you need to start stocking clothes for the upcoming fall of Autumn and Winter… Here we make a list for you of what to wear and what not to wear for the next fall.

Retro mode

How can I rock fall’s retro trend without looking like Madonna’s tacky costume?

Of course you love the ’80s! That fizzy, bright joie de vivre! The return of ‘80s style makes us want to leap through the air. We’re guessing Marc Jacobs feels the same way, because he drove the trend back to ’86. His fall 2009 runway show took the key looks of the era—color, pouf, the general vibe of a decadent, glitzy party—and brought them to even greater, glossier, brighter heights.

So essentially you can go two ways:
‘80s Debutante
Must-have item: a fitted bustier-style party frock with a short skirt that’s got plenty of floof and volume in it, almost like what Deepika has worn.
Dream vintage-store treasure: anything made of sheer polka-dot net.

Hot Danceteria Girl
Must-have item: a bright, stretchy minidress. You can wander to your local mall and scoop up these by the armful in an array of colors and, of course, black.
The key to remember: no neutral colors. In the ’80s, people were either crazy about bright colorful or in severe all-black.

Once you have your ’80s piece, add some cool layers, like a white button-down knotted at the waist, a slouchy jean jacket, or blazer. Don’t forget some black tights or leggings. For shoes, try simple structured ballet flats or some sort of crushed lace-up boots. Go light on the jewelry, and let the focus be on the clothes. Add simple earrings, like hoops or studs, and leave it at that.

Sixties Style

Well, there’s a lot to love about ’60s fashion. All those limbs! The cute little go-go boots! The zippers and big buttons! It's fresh, it has energy and style—it feels young. Where it goes horribly wrong and goofy is when people get all costumey. The style can be done with just a print, a silhouette, a hemline.

Modern-day ’60s chic goddesses Kate Moss or Freida Pinto epitomize this perfectly, in their tiny little skirts and rock-star fur vests - but instead of looking retro, they look stylish, ahead of the curve.

Rule of thumb: Take only the best of it. Phillip Lim did exactly this in his fall 2009 runway show; he sampled the androgynous skinny-skinny pantsuits and over-the-top shaggy furs and vests. From mod, he took straight, clean cuts and defiantly short hemlines.

Skip the ’60s accessories and shoes that instantly scream costume - frankly, all that Brave New World jewelry and awkward footwear never really worked to begin with.
