Acting in a daily soap can be painful at times. And Rajshri Thakur aka Saloni in Saat Phere can vouch for it. The actress is having a terrible time coping with the heavy jewellery that she is required to wear in the show. Rajshri is made to wear heavy earrings that render her a traditional bahu look. But the heavy jewellery, especially her earrings have taken a toll on her ear lobes. Says Rajshri, "My ear lobes are very thin. Initially when my creative team decided upon this particular look, where I would be wearing heavy jewellery, I didn't realise what I was getting into. Not only are they heavy for my ears, the long earrings keep getting entangled in my tresses, which is quite irritating. I often find myself in pain and distress. Sometimes, I feel that my ear lobe will tear apart. Once I even had to go to a doctor to get ointments for the sore. Ever since, I have been using lighter earrings and I make sure to take them off when I am not shooting."
Says a source from the unit, "Since Saloni had to look different after marriage, we draped her in saris designed more like dupattas, brocade blouse and heavy jewellery to go with her image of a bahu from the royal family. But since Rajshri is having a tough time, we had to let her wear lighter stuff."
This is not all. Her straight-hair look is also giving her grief. "Although I have natural straight hair, still my hair dresser applies a lot of chemicals on my hair every day, which has completely damaged my hair. To maintain the continuity of my look, I have been strictly instructed not to tie up my hair in the show."
But has she spoken with the producers about her problem? "I have spoken to them and thankfully they are okay with light earrings that I am wearing these days," she says.

I’m a housewife without a husband’
Neena Gupta, who’s been keeping a low profile, talks about love, life and destiny.
ROSHNI K OLIVERA
You’ve been keeping a low profile recently...
My forte’s television, but I have stopped producing shows. That was not my scene. Now, I’m only acting. I’m waiting for a good role to come my way. That’s why you’ve not seen me much.
Why do you say production’s not your scene when you’ve made some successful shows like S a a n s?
Yes, Saans, Palchin, Son Pari have all done well. Even Kyun Hota Hai Pyaar started off very well. But, times have changed and I am very comfortable acting. I’ve realised that acting is my passion. I enjoy doing that the best. The problem is once you become a producer, people hesitate to approach you with acting offers. They feel you may not want to act in their serials. In fact, I’ve met three to four people who’ve told me that. I want to change that perception.
Where do you see yourself as an actor in the current television scenario?
I feel I have such a range as an actor that I can fit into anything. I may not be able to play a college student, but I can always play a mother to young kids. I’m not really interested in negative roles. Basically I’m open to doing any good role — be it on television, in films or theatre.
What’s up on the personal front?
I’m busy with my daughter’s life. Her HSC board exams are on. I’ve been devoting a lot of time to her, discussing her future plans... what course she’d like to pursue etc.
You haven’t been socialising much these days...
I have a few close friends. We meet up regularly.
After your break-up with Vivian Richards you haven’t been in a relationship. Don’t you miss that someone special in you life?
Yes. But that doesn’t mean I go with anybody and everybody. I have a teenaged daughter an an 84-year-old father at home. That keeps me on my toes all the time! A lot of my energy is devoted there. I’m a fullfledged housewife without a husband! But I also believe it’s destiny. Whatever has to happen will happen, be it work, love or anything in life. Of course you have to work towards it.
So are you working towards meeting somebody in life?
You cannot work towards meeting somebody. You cannot look for anybody. The day he has to come in to your life, he will, even if you are sitting at home.
brijesh
And your TV journey?
Ravi Rai offered me shows like Thoda Hai Thode Ki Jaroorat Hai and Teacher and with Raman Kumar I have done Rahe. My other projects include Thodi Si Bewafai, Choodiyan Chattan, Choti Ma, Samne Wali Khidki (which was a huge hit) and Shagun. After that I took eighteen months break and re-surfaced with Anubhav Sinha's Chi and Me based on E.T.. Then Saat Phere happened and now it's Virasaat.
Do you remember working with Karan Johar in Indradhanush?
Ya I do. Karan was a smart boy even in those days. He used to be worried about me as I had left my leather business in Calcutta to act in Indradhanush. In those days Karan had bought the audiocassette of Chandani and he was very enthusiastic about the world of cinema. He even fixed up my meeting with his father for a story narration.
You mean you had the writing ambitions also?
Yes I even wrote one story of four episodes of Raat Hone Ko Hai, produced by B. P. Singh.
How's your experience been playing Brijesh bhai sahib in Saat Phere?
I enjoy it as I am like that in real life too. My family matters the most. It is in synchronization with my persona. At public places people come forward and address me as Brijesh bhai sahib.
saloni
Rajshri Thakur has every reason to be ecstatic these days. She is now married to her long-time beau Sanjot Vaidya and is super-excited about being addressed as Rajshri Vaidya.
When asked about the feelings of taking saat pheras in real life, she says, “It was a very long day.
The ceremony went on for hours, but it was exactly the way I wanted it to happen. I am in a very happy state of mind these days.”
Line lagao
The actress tied the knot to Sanjot on February 8 in a traditional Maharashtrian wedding. Suffering from pre-wedding blues that ranged from sending invitation cards to hunting for the perfect bridal outfit, Rajshri is glad everything fell into place. “I had these wonderful designer friends Priya and Chintan who have worked with me during some wedding scenes for Saat Phere.
They designed the reception dress and put everything into place in an amazingly short period.”
Continuing with her wedding day experience, she says, “By the end of it, I really got tired standing on the stage. There was a huge queue of friends and relatives who came to meet us. But it was nice to see that everyone could make it.”
Aamne-saamne
When asked if her Saat Phere unit marked their attendance, she says, “Yes. Each and everyone of them came. I thought it was really sweet of them.”
Rajshri’s maternal home will be a stone’s throw away from her in-laws’ place. “We aren’t staying that far away from my parents’ home. But my mom is already missing me and keeps asking Sanjot when he can send me over.”
The couple has zeroed in on their honeymoon location, but have yet to fix a date. “We will go to Kerala some time in March. I love South India but have never seen the backwaters. This will be a great chance to do that.”

"Finally rajshree got married"
COMPLIMENT the ‘just married’ Rajshree Thakur (she recently tied the knot with college sweetheart Sanjyot Vaidya) on her newly acquired glow and she can’t help smiling. “Oh! I have lost a lot of weight because of the exertion during the wedding functions.
But it was a lot of fun,” says Rajshree. The Saloni of ‘Saat Phere’ (Zee) continues, “In fact, my marriage resembled a shooting schedule. All the guests wanted to pose for a photograph with us. My colleagues including Neena Gupta attended the function. So there was a mad rush to see them too.” Rajshree is enjoying her ‘newly married’ status.
“When I go out and people recognise me, I can’t help noticing the pride in the eyes of my in-laws. I also love observing the look on Sanjyot’s face. There’s happiness written all over. He even replies to my fan mail,” she beams.
Quiz her on how life has changed after marriage and Rajshree replies, “Marriage is rocking. I feel settled now.
Now I have someone to share my life with. We have known each other for the past seven years. We were together in college and have also done professional theatre together. It’s lovely to be married to the person you love,” she says.
And how is Sanjyot adjusting to her erratic schedules? “Oh, he’s aware of it since I’ve been working for a while now. He comes to pick me up when it gets very late. He even helps me at home,” she answers.
Sanjyot surprised Rajshree by taking her on a honeymoon to Mauritius.
Rajshree says, “He gave me the impression that we would be going to Kerala.
Only on the day of our departure did I learn that we were flying to Mauritius. Of course, I was ecstatic.”

Honeymoon surprise
Spa Surprise: Rajshri Thakur with husband Sanjot Vaidya
A few months after marriage, when time finally permitted, Rajshri Thakur thought she was off to Kerala for her honeymoon with husband Sanjot Vaidya.
But the actress was happily stunned when Sanjot showed her two tickets to Mauritius instead.
Not only was Rajshri thrilled, we’re told she fell in love with her hubby all over again (aww)!

"I am dark skinned but was never ridiculed for it. But I am aware that in India people still prefer a fair-skinned bride. The trend has somewhat changed in the Metros."
Smita > Hi Saloni di, you are doing a great job as 'Saloni' in Saat Phere (SP). I do not miss a single episode of the serial. How did you get your first modelling offer? What's your height and birthday?
Rajashree Thakur > Actually, I never wanted to do modelling. But, when I was participating in inter-collegiate theatre, I was told by a friend to make my portfolio. So, another friend made my portfolio, gave it to a coordinator and received audition for Bajaj Almond hair oil ad and was selected. That's how I did my first commercial. It was a-year-and-a half ago. I am 5 ft. 5inches tall and my birthday is on 22nd Sept.
Chotu > Rajashree didi, welcome to the chat. You are so beautiful then why did you choose this role where you are shown average looking?
Rajashree Thakur > Saloni is not really ugly. She's just dark. So, people think she's ugly. The problem lies with her dark skin because some people think dark skin is not beautiful. She's talented, and in my eyes she's very beautiful.
Kali > Hi Rajashree, really curious to know what's your actual skin colour. You look lovely on screen. But are you really dark? Not that it matters but I was just wondering...
Rajashree Thakur > I am dusky, and do not have a fair skin. Only, on the screen they have made me look one more shade darker because that's what the role demands.
Sudip > Have you done modelling or ad films before serial?
Rajashree Thakur > Yes, I was into modelling before. This is my first serial. I was studying LLB and started doing modelling. I have also done my first press ad for Tanishq Jewellry. I have done Jewellry ads mostly. I also did the 'India Shining' ad (of BJP) before the 2004 elections.
Skinny > You recently got engaged. When are you getting married?
Rajashree Thakur > Will get married in 2006. But have not fixed a date yet. My fiancé is a businessman.
Jigs > Do you truly believe that in India... guys look for a fair bride, as it's shown on your current serial Saat Phere ?
Rajashree Thakur > Ads in matrimonial columns still ask for this. It has not stopped completely. But, in metros the trend is changing. In modelling and commercials people prefer to cast dark skinned models. In the rural areas, fair skin sir still preferred.
Chotu > Didi, Aap Kya Lawyer Banna Chahte The Pehle (did you aspire to be a lawyer)? I mean, why did you choose movies over Law? When did you finish your LLB?
Rajashree Thakur > I finished LLB in 2004. I was doing theatre during my graduation (B.Com) but I wanted a stable field too. I also used to work at the All India Radio as a Newsreader. So, it was a casual job. Law I did as a back up because the acting field may not have provided me with stable job. But, I also did an Indo-French film. I didn't want to leave acting. I liked studying also. But, in my mind, I never wanted to be a Lawyer. I studied Law at the Government Law College, in Mumbai.
Megha > You always wanted to do films then what made you choose TV as your debut in acting? I am just assuming that this is your debut in acting. Is it really?
Rajashree Thakur > Yes, it is. I did an Indo-French film earlier so I started with a film. I didn't want to do daily soap because I was not really interested in the daily soaps that were being shown on TV. I didn't even want to go for the Saat Phere audition. But still, I went for it, and when I heard my role and the story, I realised that though it was a daily soap, it wasn't the usual saas-bahu role/narration. I didn't have to put loads of make up. I like minimum make up too. Even in my Indo-French film I had donned no make up. And I find portraying certain characters. So, without much struggle, I got a lead role on TV. And a role that I liked.
Prerna > Hi Rajashree di, how do you feel working in SP? You are so good looking. If you don't mind, can you please give me your email id?
Rajashree Thakur > Thanks. I love working in Saat Phere . My email id is rajashreethakur@yahoo.com
Smita > Rajashree, tell me about your family and your fiancé's family as well as what's his name.
Rajashree Thakur > My family consists of mom, dad, brother and sis-in- law. I am the youngest. We are 5 sisters. I have a nephew (brother's son) who I love the most. My fiancé is also from Mumbai. It's a love cum arranged marriage. We were together in college and knew each other. It was just a friendship then. We were a part of a big group consisting of all my theater friends and we would hang around together. When he proposed to me, I readily agreed. So, I told my dad about it and as the family knows him, everyone agreed to our match. My future mom-in-law is a very good cook. My fiance loves chatting. And he is a very good actor too. But, he didn't take up acting professionally. He has worked with late Bhakti Barve in plays. His name is Sanjot. And he is a Maharashtrian like me.
Sallu > Are you really on your way to becoming the sultry siren of TV? People think you are quite sexy...
Rajashree Thakur > (Laughter). Thank you. I take it as a compliment. But, I really want to do good work.
Nari > Now that you are playing a dark-skinned girl who is rejected by prospective bride grooms because of her skin colour, do you feel or understand the pain of girls who have to go through this?
Rajashree Thakur > Of course, I do. It has not happened with me. But I have seen a friend go through such a humiliation because of her dark skin colour. She's very educated but dusky. And a prospective groom rejected her. He was from a village and was not educated either. Being a Mumbai girl and very well educated, she didn't want to marry him. But, she was being pressurised to agree for a marriage with him. Fortunately, he didn't agree so the matter ended there. I think an actor should understand the feelings of her character. She should get under the skin of the character to be able to portray it well.
Chotu1 > Didi, in real life, will you marry someone who is dark?
Rajashree Thakur > I don't mind. Dark skin is not a criterion for me. He should be smart. Should have a good personality. Look at Abhishek Bachchan! Isn't he smart? I really don't understand the fair skin ad for men!!!!
Jk123 > Rajashree, what is DoB? You look more like a Capricorn. Does your nature match your character, in the serial Saat Phere ?
Rajashree Thakur > I am a cusp of Libran and Virgo. My birthday is on 22 Sept. My nature is more like Libran -balanced. And I think a lot before taking a decision. Such is my nature. I think Saloni's character too is like this. So, this might be the similarity in out character. I think Librans too are very creative. Saloni is very talented. She is a good dancer and a singer.
Kali > I am really confused as to what's Saat Phere about. Is it about a dark skin girl who cannot get married or is it about the journey of a girl who discovers herself? The promos have all been about how the girl is rejected by grooms for marriage. But the serial director says something else in his online interviews. Please explain.
Rajashree Thakur > Saloni's story starts with this. Because of her dark skin she gets rejected. Her journey begins from there. And then moves on to how she goes through the trauma. Then, at one place she declares she wouldn't marry. She discovers her self-respect. It's a self-discovery. Marriage is not the only purpose in her life.
Prerna > Does your family like you working in Saat Phere ? Are you really a singer? Do you like music? Which is your favourite song?
Rajashree Thakur > Yes, they like it. Initially, in my theatre days they did not like me coming home late because it used to take up my time and I was studying then. But now, after the ads and this serial, they are quite happy to see me onscreen. No, I am not a singer. But I love music. I have music stored on my cell phone, and in my room I have a radio, which is always on when I am in my room. I love listening to music. I have many favourite songs. The best I like is - Na Jaane Kyun from the film Chotti Si Baat.
Moja > Were you ever refereed to as ugly duckling when you were growing up?
Rajashree Thakur > Never. I used to get a lot of compliments. I have a good looking hair and people liked my hair. In fact, a friend used to call me Zeenat Aman. I had very silky and shiny hair. So, I think it was because of that.
Braveman > Saloniji, your acting is superb!
Rajashree Thakur > Thank you very much!
Sign Off Message > Thank you all for your encouragement. I am very happy that you watch Saat Phere and I like your response. Please keep encouraging me. Your response matters to all the actors. A very happy new year to all of you!
