Yantras are visual tools that serves either as centering devices or as a symbolic composition of the energy pattern of various deities. These Yantras has the mantra as its soul. Yantras are geometrical figures intended to represent the hidden energies. In other words Yantras are the graphic representations of Mantras. Yantras can be drawn, carved or painted on a variety of substances. The classical Eight Tantrik surfaces used for making Yantras are Gold, Silver, Copper, Crystal, Birch, Bone, Paper and Saligram.
In worship they should be placed at some height on a pedestal or pitha. Before any Yantra is made suitable for puja, it must be given life (pranapratishta). Yantras in religious context has acquired a special place in the worship of various Deities. The Yantra is used as an instrument or medium of focus on a deity, while a person meditates. The Yantras used for performing Puja is graphical representation of geometrical of abstract geometrical images such as Triangle, Squares, Pentagons, Hexagons, Circles etc.. placed in various designs. Worshipping the Almighty in the form of a Yantra is a very effective way of worshipping because the Almighty is invoked into the Yantra.
