Rajiv Khandelwal sports new image in 'Left Right Left'


Television actor Rajiv Khandelwal has gone in for an image change with his new serial 'Left Right Left', where he plays a Captain in an army academy.

The serial, which is aired weekdays on Sony/Sab channel, is the actor's first daily soap in more than a year. He last shot for 'Kahiin To Hoga' on May 18, 2005.

Said Rajiv:''Left Right Left' takes me as far away from 'Kahiin To Hoga' as possible. I'm blessed because people haven't forgotten me though I haven't been that visible on TV. I wanted to break the myth about TV stars being forgotten. And I didn't vanish entirely. I did a weekly series 'Time Bomb' for six months. Then I did a cameo in 'ID', a music video and 'Deal Ya No Deal' on Sony.'

When asked if audiences would identify him only as Sujal of 'Kahiin To Hoga', he said people knew him best as Rajiv. 'Sujal as a character remains alive because I played him for two years every day, but people don't address me as Sujal any more.'

Rajiv said that 'Kahiin To Hoga' not only brought him stardom but also helped him grow as a human being. 'I stepped out of that world and stepped into a real world.'Kahiin To Hoga' turned me into a superstar. As a person, I'm equipped to take on any challenge now.'

The actor turned down Sony's supernatural thriller 'Akela', which is also on air now, because he did not want to essay any more tense characters and he feels Sudhanshu Pande is apt for the part.

'When I heard the narration, I felt there was no vision beyond the first four episodes and I didn't want to do horror. After Sujal, I didn't want to play another tense unsmiling character. But when I saw the first episode, I knew the makers of 'Akela' had a winner on their hands and Sudhanshu Pande looks apt for the part. I couldn't have done such a good job.'

Getting back to 'Left Right Left', Rajiv said he was hooked immediately after the producers Deeya and Tony Singh called.

'After Ekta Kapoor, if there's anyone I wanted to work with it was Tony and Deeya. I come from an army background, and I'm playing an army-man in 'Left Right Left'. When I heard the story I said 'this sounds too good'. Of course, I had my doubts. We can never depict the army absolutely authentically. I'd describe 'Left Right Left' as very subtle humour in uniform.'

Rajiv however clarified that this serial isn't based on the Indian Army. 'No TV serial can afford to depict the army. It's about an academy that motivates cadets to join the army. We've designed the visuals with great care and the cadets got actually trained. I play Captain Rajvir Singh and I love it.'

'Left Right Left' will take up only 18 days each month but Rajiv says he won't do any other serial simultaneously, as he wants audiences to know him by just one character at a time.

Meanwhile, the popular actor denies reports of his high-handed behaviour while anchoring the game show 'Deal Ya No Deal'.

'My high-handedness was news to me. I was supposed to have been smoking without permission during shooting. That's what I call smoke without fire. No one on the sets was allowed to smoke and I don't need to defend myself further.'

Rajiv added that he is not bothered by failure. 'In one year I've done all kinds of stuff. I failed with 'Deal Ya No Deal'. Sony expected a miracle but I couldn't save a sinking show. But at least I tried. I'm happy as long as the people working with me are happy.

On his long-term plans, he said he would be focusing on television throughout the year. 'At the year-end, I'll take a serious look at a career in cinema.'

I want to be part of new wave on TV: Rajiv Khandelwal
New Delhi, July 30 (UNI): He is the latest entrant to the breed of "new wave" actors like Varun Badola, Neena Gupta, Rajeswari Sachdev and Niki Aneja who seek to bring a touch of realism to Indian television amid a plethora of "all black" or "all white" characters in most serials today.

His previous appearances on the small screen in 'Kahin To Hoga' and 'Time Bomb' may have presented actor Rajiv Khandelwal in either 'passionately romantic and sugary sweet characters or out-and-out action portrayals but his latest serial 'Left Right Left' has this handsome actor in a role with a "touch of realism" about it.

"Working in serials like 'Kahin To hoga' and 'Time Bomb' has been an extremely pleasurable experience. In fact, till this day, I cherish the trophies I received for these serials. However, post-'Time Bomb', I want to be a part of the new wave movement on television. Taking up 'Left Right Left' is for me a first step in this direction," Rajiv said in an interview.

Premiered on July 11 on Sab TV, 'Left Right Left' has Rajiv essaying the character of Captain Rajvir, an army captain who joins a pre-NDA academy as a training instructor.

"The character of Captain Rajvir is an extremely believable one. It is difficult to slot him in either a romantic characterisation or an action hero image. On the battlefield, this army captain is an excellent warrior with a never-say-die attitude. However, as the instructor of the young cadets, who have joined the institution to prepare themselves for a career in the army, he is like a friend and counsel to them, almost like a source of inspiration for them.

At another level, he is an endearing and lovable character for the women on the campus. In short, the character has several sides to him, just like it is in real life," Rajiv said.

In fact, working in 'Left Right Left', which deals with the Ilemmas, hopes and aspirations of the modern day youth, was for Rajiv, an altogether new experience. Part of it had to do with the fact that the serial is being produced and directed by Tony and Diya Singh, who have made pathbreaking serials like 'Banegi Apni Baat', Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin' and 'Jab Luv Hua', all of which in some way have broken the current sterotypes on television.

"Though, when first offered the role, I was initially unsure about what I was getting into, I now realise that 'Left Right Left' is the best thing which happened to my TV career. I've never worked with such a creative unit so passionate about everything they do.

"No wonder, everyone working in the serial comes across as natural and not a cardboard cut-out. Working in the serial, at no time did I feel that I was under pressure to bring out the required emotions experienced by my character," Rajiv said.

He may now be a sought-after TV actor but in college, Rajiv had aspirations of becoming a software engineer or an army officer.

"In college, I was like a typical modern-day youth, extremely confused about what to do. I was filling college forms but was not sure this is what I wanted to do. In this confusion, I also toyed with the idea of becoming a software engineer or an army officer. I even applied in the army but my form was rejected. It was then that i decided to pursue my passion-acting," he said.

The Sujal image is about to be left behind. Or So Rajiv hopes as he plunges into a new daily this week.

"Left Right Left on Sony/Sab channel is my first daily in more than a year. I shot last for Kahiin To Hoga on 18 May 2005. Left Right Left takes me as far away from Kahiin To Hoga as possible. I'm blessed because people haven't forgotten me though I haven't been seen that much on TV.

Audiences still remember Rajiv as Sujal in Kahiin To Hoga. "Not really. They know me as Rajiv. But Sujal as a character remains alive. I played him for two years every day. They don't address me as Sujal any more.

The moment you looked at Amjad Khan you remembered Gabbar Singjh. That doesn't mean people don't remember Amjad. In Kahiin To Hoga everything fitted perfectly. I became comfortable after twenty episodes only."

Though he evolved as an actor on Kahiin To Hoga, Rajiv says he grew as a humanbeing after the serial. "I stepped out of that world and stepped into a real world. Had to face a lot of adversities. Kahiin To Hoga turned me into a superstar.

After the serial I've been looking for reasons to justify that compliment. Whatever work I've done has helped me to grow. At least I had the balls to stand up for what I believed in. As a person, I'm equipped to take on any challenge now."

Rajiv turned down the Sony's supernatural thriller Akela which is now on air "I saw the hoardings and promos and knew it was a winner. But when I heard the narration there was no vision beyond the first four episodes. And I didn't want to do horror.

After Sujal in Kahiin To Hoga I didn't want to play another tense unsmiling character. When I saw the first episode I knew the makers of Akela had a winner on their hands. And Sudhanshu Pande looks apt for the part. I couldn't have done such a good job of it."

Left Right Left will only take up 18 days each month. "But I won't do another serial. I want people to know me by one character only."

Rajeev Khandelwal sashayed down the ramp for Provogue’s new line at a Juhu nightspot recently.

This was part of the launch of the title track of SAB’s new show, Left Right Left, which stars Khandelwal, along with Shveta Salve, Priyanka Bassi, and Kunal Kapoor, Produced by Tony and Deeya Singh, this campus life drama has Provogue styling the cast.

Immediately after the ramp walk, Khandelwal left the venue, miffed. To begin with, he was clueless about the catwalk. When he realised he was expected to walk the ramp, he wasn’t thrilled.

He felt his name was being used to gain mileage for the event. He also made noises saying that, had he known beforehand, he would have asked for a fee, because Provogue was using him for publicity.

Khandelwal refused to comment at first. Later, he said, “Yes, I did leave the venue immediately after the event. Anyway, I am uncomfortable at parties and avoid them.

I was at the event because of the channel and the production house; my presence was solely due to the fact that I am acting in the show. I never asked for a fee. I don’t think my name is so big to be used for publicity,” says Khandelwal, who also anchors Sony show, Deal Ya No Deal.

Apparently, the deal to showcase the cast with the new line, was finalised between the producers and Provogue. Did the production team inform him?

Says producer Deeya Singh, “I was not in town (her co-producer and husband, Tony Singh, was present at the event) on that day, so I am not aware of this. But it was more of an introduction of the cast along with the title track. They were not walking the ramp technically. But as the ramp was the stage, they had to walk down it.”

No ‘star’ treatment

Apart from the ramp bit, Khandelwal was angry about the backstage treatment. He wasn’t given a separate make-up and changing room. According to an eyewitness, “He was extremely peeved that he had to share the make-up room with other models.”

Says Khandelwal, “Yes, there were certain shortcomings which I voiced to the channel and the production house. Who else could I air my grievances to? I was there solely because of them.”

Despite all the efforts of the makers of Star Plus' Kahiin to Hoga, there always will be just one Sujal, who is not only Ekta Kapoor's dream man, but also the dream man of thousands of teens in India and abroad.
But surprisingly, Rajeev has moved on. He has had the courage to stand aside and yet pray that the character that was once so close to his heart grows and continues to have that special place in the hearts of audiences near and far. Now, with Ketan Mehta's Time Bomb, he hopes to woo audiences as the inimitable Varun, a man of many contradictions --- a far cry from the man who shed copious tears over the loss of his lady love. In an exclusive chat with Ananya Sengupta ever since he took on the new project, Rajeev Khandelwal bares all about being Sujal and about trying to make a difference in the illogical industry that he is a part of.
So Sujal is done with...has it sunk in as yet?
Yes, I am completely reconciled with the fact that I am no longer Sujal and really I am beyond KTH now. But frankly, I have given blanket orders to everybody not to talk to me about Sujal --- although I have given it up, I still have that niggling feeling about "What might have been." You know what I mean? It has not been an easy thing to leave a character of the stature of Sujal ..... this is like starting afresh. But I have decided to do it and I have no qualms in admitting that I just couldn't carry on anymore. I was confusing myself, my directors...it was getting insane!

(He asks for some tea...kadak hona chahiye, he says, dhak ke banana, he adds)

Are offers pouring in? Is that what gives you the confidence to go on?
Yes, I have got offers from virtually every channel, except the biggie! But surely everyone likes and appreciates Rajeev...perhaps more than Sujal...I know even Ekta appreciates the fact...she sms'd to invite me to her birthday party...and I have the greatest respect for both Ekta and Shobha aunty...Ekta is an intelligent girl and we have no problems with each other.
Rajeev:"I am taking on the toughest challenge of my life!"
How did your parents react when you decided to quit KTH?
My parents were aghast. They were so used to being called Sujal's parents that they didn't know how to be otherwise. My house in Rajasthan is virtually mobbed, when I am there...and they have to get used to the silence now! It will take some time for them to reconcile to this...but this will happen. One cannot live on past glories; I had to prove to myself that I was a good actor beyond being Sujal. I wanted to take care of that feeling that made me doubt my capabilities as an actor.
Now that all is settled on the professional front is it time to get married?
Well, my parents are trying their very best. More so because my younger brother is getting married this week...but I want to live my life my way...in that sense, I may say I am very selfish!
(At this point he is called for a shot, and we leave after taking some quick snaps, hoping that Rajeev will re-invent himself as Varun, and that Sujal remains with him as a sweet but distant memory!)

No way. It's just a rumour. When one is successful, people want to talk about him in whatever way they can. The show is very successful and will complete one year in September. People love the character of Sujal Garewal, so there is no question of me quitting it.
